I finally came across the right combination for my note taking and sketches. As a subscriber to Field Notes I needed to find a better way to use them. They fit into my back pocket but soon get dog eared from daily use. A search on Etsy brought me to a simple Horween Chromexcel leather Field Notes cover made by Ed at Hellbrand Leatherwork. Ed did a nice job at a killer price and it still fits into my back pocket. One cool thing about this case is that I can secure 2 Field Notes inside. I’m thinking about one notebook for writing and one for sketches.

Next I needed a small durable writing device. As a left hander, pens are a real mess so my instrument of choice is a mechanical pencil. I spent an evening researching online and came across a Zebra Mini TS-3 Mechanical Pencil at JetPens. I placed my order for 2 pencils and some replacement erasers.

The Zebra Mini feels solid and the metal body is well made. The pencil accommodates a 0.5 mm lead and has a clip with small eraser. For me, it’s the perfect solution and clips inside the leather cover without extra bulk. The Zebra Mini’s small size might make it hard to hold if you have large hands. Below are some other pencils that turned up as possible choices in my search.

Lamy Scribble Drafting Pencil

Pilot Birdy Switch Multi Pen/Pencil

Retro 51 Tornado Pencil

I never thought I could get this amped about a little notebook. Field Notes has me excited about writing and sketching again.

Here are some progression shots of our house. In 2003 we moved in, however, the house was a little blah. Each year we have made improvements to get it to the state it’s in now. The house has some styling cues that moved us towards an Arts and Crafts feel. We would like to add other details in the future such as brackets under the soffit, modify the entry with an arbor and brick pavers in place of the concrete driveway.

Ty’s 18th birthday gift was to go to the Deadmau5 concert in Chicago. Tyler, his friend Aamon and myself headed off to Chicago last Saturday. My sister was kind enough to treat us with a meal and a custom cake made by my niece. She created a cake that was in the form of the Deadmau5 head. BEST CAKE EVER! We left the my sister’s full of spaghetti and cake and headed for the hotel.

After checking into the hotel, it was time to prep for the 6 hour event. The boys energized their bodies with Redbull, Twinkies and assorted junk food.

A quick and convenient cab ride put us in front of the sold out show at the Congress Theater. The line was short and moved fast. The boys presented their tickets, flashed ID’s and made it through an aggressive and thorough security search. In the main lobby the boys made a b-line to purchase concert shirts. Amazingly, the main act, Joel Zimmerman (AKA Deadmau5), was there signing autographs. Ty had his phone signed and Aamon had his ticket signed.

We sat in the balcony for the first two acts and then moved to the main floor for Deadmau5. The show was an engaging display of light and sound. It was pretty cool to actually FEEL the music. A breeze coming off the sub-woofers was an unexpected benefit of standing on the floor in front of the stage. We had a blast and the video below is a small taste of what we saw. The video was shot with my phone so forgive the quality.
